May 05, 2012  Most of you know by now I’m a big fan of cloud backup, and specifically Backblaze — and in full disclosure I do not take any advertising or promotional revenue from them, however I do often post my affiliate link. The only bill I’m paying with that is maybe dinner once a month, so I’m not making a living suggesting you use this service. In the end, I figured it out by digging around my Library folders. Here’s how: Backblaze’s data is stored in the package /Library/Backblaze.bzpkg. To see that data, go to the root Library folder, right-click the Backblaze.bzpkg, and click “Show Package Contents”. Go to the bzdata folder and open the bzinfo.xml file in a text editor. Hello,
Recently, my MacBookAir5,2 with OS X 10.10.3 has been slowing down and then speeding back up like it's choking on something about once every 30 seconds or so. The slowness is crippling to the point that I can't even type and I have to wait for the rainbow of death to go away. The entire system hangs until whatever processing is done.
In reading some of the other posts, I found Linc Davis's diagnostic script, and I have also pasted some of what I think is problematic from the Console.

  • I have an i7 15' with 4gb ram and 80gb free space on its disk.
I had installed Safari 5 before getting the MacOSXUpdCombo 10.6.4.
After the install the problem started. An extreme slowdown with few programs open.
I like to keep an eye on swapfile space so watch /private/var/vm. I found that for the first time I had more than 3 swapfiles. In point of fact I had 13!! or about 10Gigs. This was why the MacBook Pro was almost unusable.
I reinstalled the update and with only Safari running it was again spawning swapfiles. Did all the usual: caches, permissions, disabled extensions and add-ons to safari and it was still eating disk space.
However I may have found the cure. I have just downloaded the standalone Safari 5 installed it and it has so far cured the problem.

Thanks for the suggestion of Whatsize. It didn't reveal any invisible folders with my data inside.
Whatsize from <http://www.id-design.com/software/whatsize/> is intriguing in showing how much garbage is on the HD. It was surprising to see caches that I thought had been deleted were still on the disk.
I am currently back to 95% of files restored from other sources and i'm recovering my distributed assets from the net.

  • I've only had my Macbook Pro for one year so far, so it's JUST outside of warranty by about a month. Over the last few months or so, I've noticed it start to lag when opening applications or loading files. Sometimes webpages will cause a spinning beach ball which will then take around a minute or two before it kicks into life again.
I'm wondering if there's any reason for this or what I can do to clear up the issue? I've still got over half the amount of hard disk space available on my laptop, so I'm assuming it's not to do with that, and I can't see anything in activity monitor that stands out as being a true culprit of this. Is it just typical slowdown caused by having a lot of programs installed over time?
I usually find it happens more when I'm trying to load another program or do simultaneous projects at once. However, although I only occasionally turn off my laptop fully (it's usually in standby for most of the time) I find initial startup time when loading the laptop up takes longer than it should when it's logged in to settle down. I'm guessing this could be the number of things I have on startup but I'm not sure if there's anything I could remove that would speed up the issue.
Any advice you could give would be appreciated. Thanks!

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

  • Hello
Since summer 2007 we have been experiencing speed problems with one of our Macs a Macbook bought in 2006. Initially we thought it was just because we were asking too much of the computer. But unfortunately this is not the case. What happens is that while working normally (normal performance) with one or more applications, the computer starts to slow down to a near halt. You notice this because instead of for example opening a new window right away it slowly unrolls the window until it is open. At the same time the fan starts to accelerate and often the little color wheel appears instead of the mouse arrow. The computer is warm but not hot. Usually after a while the speed of the computer comes back to normal and the fan will stop turning at high speed. When checking cpu usage during such an 'episode' most of the time cpu usage by Safari or Firefox Activity monitor indicates cpu usage by Safari and Firefox 100-110 % which strikes me as not being right . Quitting these programs seems (seems !) to return the computer to normal faster. The Apple store has replaced the memory, no effect, I did a total clean install of OS, updated it to the latest version of Tiger no effect. What can be the problem ? Is it the logic board as a whole or the graphics portion ? Or is something blocking the vent and it does not cool sufficiently? We are at a loss what to do.
Any advise would be appreciated. Right now all I can think of is to bring the computer in to an Apple Care Center probably resulting in a high bill even though in retrospect this problem started before the expiry of the Apple warranty.
    Many thanks for any help.

    Hello thanks,
We use websites like Wall Street Journal online, viamichelin.fr, yahoo, NCBI. I may have given the wrong impression that it only happens with internet use, it also happens with iMovie or Nikon capture NX but I guess we just notice it more with internet use because this computer is mostly used for that plus e-mail.
    H van Es
I took a look at those sites. I noticed several ad/content displays on online.wsj.com which probably used Flash or Java animation/video. Yahoo! typically has tons of animation features (especially stuff like falling snow on holidays), and viamichelin.fr has a bunch of animated ads. NBCI looks to be the nastiest of the bunch.
If your fan is turning on from having multiple websites like those on, I'm not surprised.

  • Hi,
since when i upgraded my MacBook Pro 13 from Lion to Mountain Lion i'm experiencing a very hard slowdown in showing me the folder content's, especially if the folder contain .CR2 files(canon raw). Also, if i try to move some .CR2 files to the trash, it takes a very long time, even for a single file.
No issue to visualizing the same files with quicklook.
Can anyone suggest me a solution? My workflow is badly compromised by that problem.
    Thanks,
    Luca

    Hi again,
after the upgrade to 10.8.2 the problem is still there. Now i'm thinking to reinstall the OS. For the first time in my Mac experience(since system 9).
    Thanks,
    Luca

  • Hey guys,
I have noticed when someone vpn's into the server it causes the other services that are running to slow down and gives the spinning domino's at the bottom of the server admin screen and all of the services that are indicated by the green buttons get hyphens on them. Everything on the server is movable, like mouse so I know the server is not locked up but I can notice that when someone vpn's it causes the services to go slower and causes the mail to give errors on people on our network. Any suggestions??
    G5 Xserv Mac OS X (10.4.9)

    VPN clients are given 10.20.100.201 - 209
    DHCP clients are given 10.20.100.10 - 200
Servers are >.10 and printers are <.210 for our office.
    I set the routing definition to 10.20.100.0 // 255.255.255.0 // private
The server has 3 NIC cards inside it.
The Built in NIC (eth0) is serving the 10. subnet with an address of 10.20.100.1
eth1 is an apple gig-e card, connected to our SDSL line with a static IP
eth2 is an apple gig-e card, connected to nothing.
I am able to connect SMB shares on the server when connected to the VPN by entering their implicit path in windows //server01/sharedocs, or by afp://10.20.100.1 once the connection is made.
While I remain connected the server is still allowing mail & WebDav connections to our Kerio mail, and webmail users can still get mail. However within a few minutes of disconnecting no one is able to get mail either through entourage, mac mail, outlook or webmail. I am at that point unable to SSH or Timbuktu Pro connect to the server (they time out) i can bring up webmail, and log in, but it hangs at that point, I can bring up the Admin HTTPS page of the kerio server and view settings and status (0 clients connected)
I am wondering if this isnt some issue between the VPN and OpenDirectory, because SSH uses the usernames in open directory, so is Timbuktu, the mail server is getting its users from open directory, so is WebDav, but the Admin account of the webmail is hardwired into the server and not pulled from OpenDirectory. I have nothing but that to go on, and i lack the knowledge to know where to look to test that theory.

  • Is there a way to take a single clip, and slow down portions of the clip, while speeding up other portions of the clip.
Is there a way to adjust playback speed using keyframes I guess is my basic question, so the start of the clip is slow motion, then the middle is played back at an accelerated or normal rate, then the end of the clip becomes slow motion again.
    -Roger

Yes, is the short answer. Using the time remapping feature in the 'effects' panel (top center of the screen, second tab from the left) you can set certain portions of the clip to play back at normal speed, then slow it down in certain sections, and then speed it back up. You can also cut the clip using the razor tool (in the tools panel at bottom right of the screen) and just reduce the speed of that section of the clip. The downside to using the time remapping (if my memory serves me - don't take my word for it) is that you lose audio, but the transitions from normal to slow-mo and back are much smoother. Using the razor tool, you simply place the timeline indicator where you would like to begin the slow motion segment, then cut the clip with the razor tool, the repeat the process where you want the slow-mo section to end. Then, select the section that you want to play back in slow motion, and reduce the speed. This is the method that was used before the time remapping feature was available. The transitions are not at smooth, but you can keep audio for the sections where the speed isn't modified. Just be sure to select the 'ripple edit' check box when you modify the speed/duration setting of the clip (right click the video clip to get the speed/duration setting dialog box).

  • Hi. I have a G5 with OS X Server 10.4.10 connected to a RAID. Several Macs connect to it (AFP) for general file serving. For the last week or so, several times a day everyone will get the spinning beach ball while accessing the server. A minute or two later it will resume normal function.
Does anyone know what I can do to fix this? My operators are getting VERY angry at me..
    Thanks
    Kendall

Run ps -ax when processes are running normally.. When everything locks up run it again and match up your processes. Also check your Statistics in Activity monitor when the lock up happens, especially disk usage. I've noticed most problems we have with client lock ups are related hard disk thrashing instead of CPU/Network overuse.

  • Totally new to GB as my PT kneeled, I made a recording in BG which seemed ok at the moment I recorded. But, getting back to it, the track (spoken voice) was distorted and sped up in tempo. Looking at the track info, it says no effects are added, so what can this be?
    Recorded via M-box.
Can it be saved? Very very greatful for help as this is an important track for a project.
    Ibook Mac OS X (10.4.7)

If you clipped the incoming signal, then there's probably no way to repair it. Once clipped, it is clipped.

  • Currently running a WRT54GL with firmware: v4.30.5
I'm having issues. It seems that randomly some sites seem to take forever to load (including the router homepage [192.168.1.1]). Other times they load fine. And even other times it refuses to load the pages altogether and I have to keep refreshing until my router connects.
I have already tried connecting directly to the modem and it works just fine for hours on end. Yet with the router it doesn't work. Any reason why this could be happening? Currently have 2 PC's directly connected, one wirelessly (that is rarely used, only during the weekends), and an Xbox 360.
Any suggestions on fixing this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Any help at all? I'm still having issues..

  • I've pinned down what I think is some problem with Safari and Javascript.
If I leave Safari open for over 24 hours, with several pages open in tabs, in Activity Monitor Safari shows about 1.38Gig of VM and Safari is molasses slow.
Turning off Javascript immediately restores the speed in Safari but the HUGE VM usage remains.
So, I turned off Javascript, relaunched Safari, opened the exact same sites in tabs and left Safari sitting there for 24+ hours. It's now using only 203MBs of VM and it's still swishy fast as it should be.
It seems like a problem between Safari and Javascript. Can anyone else confirm this phenomena before I send an official report to Apple?
    Thanks:)

Confirmed. Running Safari with the Debug option on will tell you that there are some memory leaks with JavaScript objects.

  • I was at a computer club meeting yesterday and there was one discussion about how Windows XP creates many files that over a relatvely short time significantly degrade the system's performance. One person there, something of a Windows expert, said yes it is a problem and that the only way to deal with it is to reformat the hard drive and reinstall Windows and everything else. He said it probably needs to be done once or twice a year. That was subsequently confirmed to me by others.
So my question is: Does MacOSX suffer from the same problem?
    12' PowerBook G4 1.5GHz G4, 1.25GB Mac OS X (10.4.6)

All operating systems have similar problems because all operating systems do similar things. OS X does help to alleviate some of these problems. For example, OS X automatically defrags files on the fly (under 20 MBs.) Unless you have a disk full of very large files there's no need to defragment the hard drive.
Have plenty of RAM installed (the more the better) and always maintain an adequate amount of free space on the hard drive: 6-8 GBs or 15 percent of the drive's capacity whichever is greater.
OS X has several built-in maintenance scripts that run on daily, weekly, and monthly schedules that clean out log files, temp files, and cache files as well as rebuilds the lookup database. These scripts run in the early AM, but only if your compute is left on 24/7 (no sleep or shutdown.) If this is not the case you can install a shareware utility that automates the process completely. It's called Macaroni (www.versiontracker.com.)
For occasional maintenance and cleanup you can use one of several available utilities. I highly recommend the shareware utility TinkerTool System (www.versiontracker.com.)
Before installing any system updates or software always repair your hard drive and permissions first. Never update system software until the hard drive has been verified as OK. I also suggest booting into safe mode before installing system software or updates.
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance and optimization and backup and restore. Maintaining a bootable backup can greatly simplify recovery if something goes awry.
Under normal circumstances there should be no need to reinstall OS X. I maintain six different computers all running OS X. None have ever required erasing the hard drive and reinstalling.

  • I have a horrific time so far with my brand new Macbook Air, mid 2013 version.
On the second week of usage, it cannot 'wake up' after putting to 'Sleep'.
Went to apple repair, changed logic board.
Came back working well, then it happened again after another 2 weeks. This time it seems the laptop was running even after I put to 'sleep'.
Apple repair changed logic board again. And re-install Maverick.
This goes well for 2 months, then one day while browsing internet, the screen snapped off and huge smell like burning came off from the right side usb port. But nothing was connected there, and nothing was placed near there. After 30minutes cool off, I tried the on-off button and I noticed strong burning smell came back.
Now it is still at the repair shop, initial diagnosis - logic board again.
On google search for macbook air problems, it's all over the place. How can we get this (poor quality macbook air product) being looked into by Apple with responsibility?

Cancel that..you say you have an iMac G4? Those aren't affected by the power supply issue I mentioned before I edited the post.
    Only certain iMac G5s are.
    Good luck getting it repaired!

  • So I've experienced not one problem since getting my mid-2011 MacBook Air. After installing the Thunderbolt update that was pushed through Software Update the other day, I've noticed that when I go into Mission Control or App Expose it's more sluggish than it used to be.
Additionally, I saw my screen flicker several times - I have never seen this before.
Has anyone experienced similar problems since installing this update the other day when it came out? I'm most concerned about the sluggishness of the screens.
    Thanks,
    BJC

I never installed it, it's popped up each time I've checked -- but today it wasn't offered in Software Update. Odd.

  • Got a white first-gen MacBook that's slowing to a crawl. Activity Monitor shows everything in single digits or below, except Safari -- which is up around 50 - 60.
Any ideas as to how I can fix this? Running Safari 3.2.1.
    Thanks.

I just stumbled across this post, searching for a reason for my MacBook to be so slow. When I opened Activity Monitor, I find that Safari (version 4) is using 142 MB real memory. What the heck??? I have one window, one tab open, so that can't be the problem. Any thoughts on how I can correct this???
    Thanks!!!
